I’ve spent my whole career with organizations reducing and managing complex risks to:
- Keep employees safe and healthy in their work environment and
- Protect the environment and the local community
Along the way, the engineer in me has driven a curiosity in the data that informs risk management decision making. We’ve relied on many of the same approaches for decades now… measuring incident rates, gathering leading and lagging metrics, tracking completion of action plans… all in an effort to prevent the next ‘big event’ from happening.
Most of these approaches so far focus almost entirely on ‘categorical’ data gathering and analysis. This data fits neatly into spreadsheets, pareto charts, trend charts and tables.
I believe the time is now to pivot from a focus on this structured categorical data to embracing the massive amounts of unstructured data that may hold much richer insights. The written narrative, spoken dialogues, even body language and expression, can tell us much more about risk conditions and how humans may be interpret those conditions.
That’s why I’m launching RiskInsights.ai as a platform to research, inform others and demonstrate what’s possible. I want to show how advanced data techniques, particularly those methods that rely on applying AI technologies, can help risk management professionals impact their organizations in a positive way.
