Network insights Volume 1

How’s the transition going and what have you learned?

Thanks to all of you in my network for your time and help over recent weeks. This process is just starting and I’d like to share with you a brief idea-stream of my research questions and insights.

Where are the bright spots right now?

  • Near-shoring: more ‘make it where you buy it’ strategy and less distancing in the supply chain.
  • Vertical integration vs. ‘late stage configuration’ approaches to operational efficiency.
  • 5G buildout – how are utilities playing in this market?
  • Healthcare is export-resilient, medical devices less so.
  • Construction – residential, industrial, and infrastructure – plenty of risk management opportunities in this space.
  • Everything is moving to the ‘cloud’; data science / analytics… even if you are not in IT, learn the language and know how it applies to your field.
  • Mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and integration are near constants in the market – stay current on who owns what in your target markets as it likely just changed yesterday.
  • HOP and SIF are driving the safety agenda; exoskeletons, cobots, and ‘visual literacy’  are up and coming. Fatigue management, fleet & motor vehicle safety are partially unsolved and are not going away.

What can EHS senior leaders learn from colleagues in operations, HR and other functions?

  • Lean / six sigma / TPS is here to stay and is a transferable competency… partner, align and promote these philosophies
  • Partner in sustainability if you do not directly own it
  • Collaborate on / in enterprise risk if you do not directly own it
  • Coronavirus event is just the latest example of the volatile world we live in. Use the learnings from this response to be more agile to respond to the next big impact.
  • Last but not least, solid and dependable leadership never goes out of style

Remote work

OK, this is a worn out topic, but the March 24 HBR Ideacast had me asking…  How well are businesses that suddenly moved remote implementing remote work ‘launch’ strategies to keep teams engaged? Dr.Tsedal Neeley, of Harvard Business School summed it well in the interview.
